The Ministry of Economy was established with the merger of the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Trade and Tourism in December 1999 by Decision of the National Assembly.

The Ministry of Economy develops the objectives and priorities of the state strategy and implements the state policy in the field of industry, trade, tourism, privatization and state interest management in these fields. It participates in the implementation of the integration policy and the foreign economic cooperation.

From December 1999 to July 2001, Peter Jotev was Minster of Economy and Deputy Prime Minister. For the same period, members of the Political Cabinet of the Minister were:

  • Lubov Panayotova, Deputy Minister of Economy
  • Mariana Assenova, Deputy Minister of Economy
  • Christo Mihailovsky, Deputy Minister of Economy
  • Ivan Ivanov, Deputy Minister of Economy.

    From July 25, 2001 to July 17, 2003 Nikolay Vassilev was appointed Minister of Economy and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria. For the same period, members of the Political Cabinet of the Minister were:

    By the idea of Deputy Prime Minister Nikolay Vassilev The Ministry of Economy has launched a new national career guidance programme "Bulgarian Dream" project for university students, graduates and young specialists in economics. During 2002 19 students were carried out their practices in multinational companies and more then 300 students - in Bulgarian companies and state institutions.

    Mrs. Lydia Shouleva was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy in the period between 18 July 2003 and 23 February 2005.

    The Political Cabinet of the Ministry of Economy in this period comprised:

    Mr. Milko Kovachev was appointed Minister of Economy of the Republic of Bulgaria on 24 February 2005 and 16 August 2005.
