For the period January–June 2025, Bulgaria’s trade with Canada amounted to over USD 310 million

The Minister of Economy and Industry, Peter Dilov, held a meeting with John Ormond, the newly appointed Trade and Economic Counsellor at the Embassy of Canada in Romania, also accredited to Bulgaria. The two discussed economic cooperation between the countries as well as opportunities for expanding trade and investment. Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Dontcho Barbalov also took part in the meeting.

During the discussion, it was noted that in the period January – June 2025 Bulgaria’s trade with Canada exceeded USD 310 million, representing an increase of more than 80% compared with the same period in 2024.

Minister Dilov emphasised that Bulgaria remains fully committed to deepening bilateral economic and trade cooperation. “We stand ready to further develop our partnerships in key sectors,” he stated.

In recent years, trade between the two countries has intensified and improved. Since 2017, when the provisional application of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the EU began, Bulgaria’s exports of goods to Canada have grown by 180%, while exports of services have risen by around 35%, it was noted during the meeting.

The two also discussed potential opportunities for attracting new Canadian investment.

“Canadian direct investment so far has been concentrated mainly in the extractive industries and business process outsourcing. Our country seeks to expand investment cooperation also in the high-technology sectors,” Minister Dilov said.

According to him, Bulgaria offers very favourable conditions for investment, which Canadian companies can benefit from.

The Minister of Economy underlined that Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area and its expected entry into the Eurozone on 1 January 2026 will strengthen the country’s external economic integration and create new opportunities to facilitate business relations on both sides.
