The guidelines for the application of the obligation to display the prices of goods and services in both currencies, and for the cash payment of purchases in euro and lev in connection with the introduction of the euro in the Republic of Bulgaria, have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Act on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria (AIERB).
The purpose of the document is to provide additional clarity regarding the application of the provisions of the AIERB concerning the period of dual display of prices of goods and services in lev and euro – from 8 August 2025 until 8 August 2026 – as well as the period of dual circulation, during which both currencies will simultaneously be legal tender – from 1 January to 31 January 2026.
The guidelines have been developed by the expert working group “Non-Financial Sector” of the Coordination Council for the Preparation of the Republic of Bulgaria for Membership in the Euro Area. They apply to traders in the non-financial sector and do not apply to traders providing financial services, for whom special rules under the AIERB are in force.
The general recommendations for preparing price labels are for the prices in lev and in euro to be indicated clearly and legibly, in the same font size, and with their respective abbreviations or symbols (лв., €, BGN, EUR). Excessive or additional elements that could confuse the consumer should be avoided.
Recommendations have also been issued to traders on how to apply the rules on dual price display in different cases – e.g. goods offered in packaging, goods sold in bulk, services provided outside the retail premises, and others.
For the convenience of traders, sample visualisations have also been prepared, which can be viewed here: https://evroto.bg/bg/euro/eurozone/documents
