Bilateral trade between Bulgaria and Hungary reached €2.29 billion in 2024 and continues to grow in 2025.
“All these elements – Schengen, the euro, connectivity, energy security, and a stable business environment – clearly demonstrate why Bulgaria is the right choice for Hungarian companies seeking new markets and partnerships,” stated Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Dontcho Barbalov, who took part online in the Bulgarian–Hungarian Business Forum, held in the city of Kecskemét, which brought together representatives of businesses and institutions from both countries.

He emphasised that Hungary is among Bulgaria’s key trade and investment partners. In 2024, bilateral trade reached €2.29 billion, with Bulgarian exports amounting to €587 million, marking an increase of over 4%. In the first five months of 2025, trade already amounted to €990 million, indicating the resilience and growth potential of the economic partnership between the two countries.
Deputy Minister Barbalov highlighted Bulgaria’s strategic role in Southeastern Europe, noting that full Schengen membership facilitates the movement of goods and people, reduces logistical costs, and provides businesses with competitive advantages. “The introduction of the euro will make payments easier and more secure, lower transaction costs, and ensure a predictable macroeconomic environment for investors,” he further stressed.
Barbalov pointed out that Bulgaria’s unique geographical position makes it a natural bridge between the European Union and Southeastern Europe. Transport and energy connectivity projects will transform the country into a major logistical and economic hub for the region.
In his address, the Deputy Minister also emphasised the importance of energy diversification for businesses, noting that the completion of the Greece–Bulgaria Interconnector and the development of the Vertical Gas Corridor provide security for industrial consumers and stability of supply.
He underlined that as a member of the EU and NATO, Bulgaria is a stable factor in the region, offering a secure and predictable environment for investment and business development. “I am confident that today’s forum will serve as a starting point for new joint projects and will further deepen our partnership,” concluded Deputy Minister Barbalov.
