“Following the introduction of the euro, we expect a strengthening of trade and economic relations without any risk to businesses and citizens,” said Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Dontcho Barbalov in Sliven during an information meeting held as part of the National Information Campaign on the Introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria.
He emphasised that discussions with Commercial and Economic Affairs Counsellors (CEACs) and representatives of foreign businesses regarding the euro introduction have been extremely positive. “We expect the process to be transparent and fair, ensuring that no one is disadvantaged,” Barbalov added.
During the discussion, the Deputy Minister recalled that the Ministry had developed Guidelines for the Proper Application of the Obligation for Dual Display of Prices for Goods and Services, designed to support businesses in the transition.
“The 8th of October is approaching – the date until which the control authorities will issue only recommendations to traders, without imposing sanctions. After this deadline, active enforcement of the law will begin,” stressed Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Dontcho Barbalov.
During the event, Barbalov also reminded participants that the Ministry of Economy and Industry monitors 30 goods and services on a monthly basis, which are key to business price formation. “I can assure you that, at this stage, there are no global factors that would lead to a sharp rise in prices,” he noted.
The Deputy Minister of Economy reiterated that the introduction of the euro is a national priority, on which work has been ongoing for more than 10 years. “We are only days away from joining more than 20 countries that use the euro as their currency. We are becoming part of a large family, and the benefits for both businesses and citizens are undeniable,” Deputy Minister Barbalov said.
In conclusion, Barbalov added that Bulgaria’s accession can be achieved successfully only through unity, consistency and cooperation between the state, business and citizens.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), the Commission on Consumer Protection (CCP), the National Revenue Agency (NRA), the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC), the Ministry of Finance, the Association of Banks in Bulgaria, as well as local authorities, non-governmental organisations, businesses and citizens.
