Deputy Minister Barbalov: Geographic Information Systems Are the Digital Twin of the City

GIS is becoming the foundation for managing resources, infrastructure and investment

“Geographic Information Systems are not merely a tool; they constitute an infrastructure for development, planning and sustainability.” This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, Doncho Barbalov, during the 26th Conference marking World GIS Day.

According to him, GIS technologies in Bulgaria have developed extremely rapidly in recent years, entering all economic sectors and proving their key role in increasing business efficiency and modernising public administration.

Barbalov noted that these technologies have already become indispensable and gave the example of the state enterprise “Management and Maintenance of Dams” (SEMMD), where GIS is used for mapping and monitoring dams – an activity of critical importance for safety and for managing water resources.

“In the “National Company Industrial Zones”, GIS supports the management of properties and engineering infrastructure, including in the Bozhurishte Industrial Zone, one of the most important areas for attracting investment in the country,” he added.

He emphasised that GIS technologies form the basis of the work of water and sewerage operators, electricity distribution and gas companies, as well as numerous businesses in the construction, logistics, agriculture, transport, energy and healthcare sectors.

“This is the digital twin of the city, and the opportunities are endless,” he said, adding that investment in GIS technologies is an investment in a more modern economy, stronger institutions and a more competitive Bulgaria.

According to him, the Ministry of Economy and Industry will continue to support digitalisation processes and the use of innovations that improve the business environment, attract investors and ensure sustainable growth.

Participants in the event included Grozdan Karadjov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications; Krasimir Nenov, Deputy Minister of Energy; Miglena Kuzmanova, Managing Director of Esri Bulgaria; Colonel Svetoslav Tsarovski, Head of the Military Geographic Service of the Ministry of Defence; and Solomon Passy, President of the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria.
