Agriculture and the food industry play a crucial role in the Bulgarian economy. Today’s event offers a platform to showcase Bulgarian food products, discuss the sector’s development, and boost its competitiveness. The Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, David Sukalinski, said this at the 18th Christmas Forum “Brand Bulgaria – Protection of Bulgarian Agriculture and Food.” He mentioned that the Bulgarian food industry still has strong export potential. “In 2023, food exports reached 11.2 billion BGN, marking a 12% increase from the previous year and making up 13% of the country’s total exports,” he added. Dr. David Sukalinski pointed out that the main markets are the European Union, Asia, and North America, and noted that Bulgarian companies in the sector help establish the country as a producer of authentic and quality products.

The Deputy Minister said that the food and beverage industry is a crucial sector, representing about 14% of the country’s industrial output. Approximately 74,000 people, or 15% of the industrial workforce, are employed in this sector, making it one of the largest employers in Bulgaria, he noted.

The Deputy Minister said the industry is seeing major technological and innovative progress, which boosts production and improves market outcomes in line with the informed choices of today’s consumers. Dr. David Sukalinski added that the Ministry of Economy and Industry supports the sector by implementing measures to enhance its competitiveness. “We are a dependable partner and are always ready to strengthen the link between producers, processors, and traders. We are working hard to improve the business environment in our country and to attract investors to key sectors for Bulgaria, such as agriculture and food,” the Deputy Minister said.

During this year’s Christmas Forum “Brand Bulgaria – Protection of Bulgarian Agriculture and Food,” annual awards were given to brands that have maintained authentic Bulgarian flavors and products over time. Dr. David Sukalinski acknowledged local winemakers from different regions of Bulgaria.
