Deputy Minister Karadimova: Consumer Protection Requires Active Dialogue and Coordinated Action Between Institutions

Consumer protection requires active dialogue and coordinated action between institutions. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Mihaela Karadimova during a meeting with representatives of the Bulgarian National Association Active Consumers (BNAAC).

During the meeting, the participants discussed issues related to consumer protection, inflationary trends, the operation of the “How Much Does It Cost?” Price Monitoring Portal, the activities of the National Consumer Protection Council, and proposals for amendments to the regulatory framework.

Deputy Minister Karadimova emphasised that the Ministry of Economy, Investments and Industry remains committed to maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders in the development and implementation of consumer protection policy. “Consumer protection is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of institutions, consumer organisations and businesses alike. The Ministry will continue to support every well-founded initiative aimed at increasing market transparency and strengthening the protection of citizens,” Deputy Minister Karadimova stated.

During the meeting, it was underlined that the Ministry of Economy, Investments and Industry places particular emphasis on supporting vulnerable groups and safeguarding consumers.

Although the Ministry has limited opportunities to directly influence these processes, it supports the implementation of effective mechanisms for consumer protection.

During the discussions, support was also expressed for increasing sanctions in cases of established unfair commercial practices. According to the Ministry, higher penalties would have a deterrent effect on economic operators with significant market power.

The operation of the “How Much Does It Cost?” Price Monitoring Portal was also discussed. Representatives of the Bulgarian National Association Active Consumers raised the issue of the need for earlier publication of up-to-date pricing data, enabling consumers to compare prices in a timely manner and make informed choices.

With regard to the National Consumer Protection Council, it was emphasised that it is an important advisory body to the Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry, supporting the development of effective state policy in the field of consumer protection. The composition of the Council is currently being updated, and once the procedure is completed, the necessary steps will be taken to resume its activities.

Deputy Minister Karadimova highlighted the active participation of consumer organisations in the Ministry’s working groups and expert forums, where legislative initiatives and consumer protection policies are discussed.

In conclusion, the parties agreed on the need to continue the active dialogue between institutions and consumer organisations in order to ensure a higher level of protection of consumer rights in Bulgaria.
