Metrology has always been a crucial link in the economy of any country. It plays an essential role in industrial production and trade, and is at the service of society in achieving a better quality of life. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Dr. David Sukalinski at the opening of a conference on the occasion of the World Metrology Day, organized by the Bulgarian Institute of Metrology, the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Supervision and the Union of Metrologists in Bulgaria at the Federation of Scientific and Technical Unions.
In his words, this year’s motto, ‘We measure today for a sustainable tomorrow’, finds its applicability to a large number of measurement opportunities that are critical to promoting a sustainable global economy and environment.
During the event, Deputy Minister Sukalinski emphasized the responsibility of metrologists. ‘They are the ones who provide confidence in measurement results, the metrological expertise that allows our modern, high-tech world to function reliably and safely’, he said.
During the conference, Deputy Minister Sukalinski stressed that proof of the high societal importance of the activities ensuring accuracy and traceability of measurements are the measures that the Ministry of Economy and Industry is carrying out for the development of metrological infrastructure.
In conclusion, Dr. Sukalinski assured that the Ministry will continue to provide the necessary support for the advancement of metrology in the future. ‘Our goal is to unite our efforts and work together to strengthen the role of metrology as an important factor for the development of the economy’, the Deputy Minister said.
The event was attended by representatives of the Bulgarian Accreditation Service, representatives of the Patent Office, representatives of the Bulgarian Institute for Standardization and others.

World Metrology Day, 20 May, marks the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. This treaty formed the basis of the international measurement system, which in turn underpins scientific discovery and innovation, industrial production and international trade, as well as improving the quality of life and protecting the global environment.
