Metallurgy is a well-established and structurally-defining sector of the Bulgarian economy. It produces raw materials and products for various other industries, making it one of the largest employers in the country. Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, Dr. David Sukalinski, said this during the National Metallurgists’ Day celebration.
In his words, the challenges of energy prices and environmental requirements that global economies have faced in recent years are no exception for Bulgaria and have impacted Bulgaria, and specifically the metallurgical industry. “Despite these difficulties, the sector continues to progress and has shown significant improvements in key indicators,” Dr. David Sukalinski said emphatically.
According to the Deputy Minister, metals have long been a major component of Bulgarian exports, positioning Bulgaria as a leading metal supplier in the EU.
Dr. David Sukalinski noted that the export of metal raw materials has been increasing in recent years. “In 2024, during the first six months alone, the export value surpassed BGN 6 billion,” the deputy minister said, adding that there has been a significant growth of 25% compared to the same period last year.
In conclusion, Deputy Minister Sukalinski stated that the sector’s development prospects are extremely positive. “This is due to the consistent rise in demand for metals and their processing into products with new added value, connected to the shift towards a low-carbon industry and the digital transformation that Bulgaria and EU countries are experiencing,” he explained.
The Bulgarian Association of the Metallurgical Industry organized the event, with President Rumen Radev as the guest of honor at the official celebration of the professional holiday.
